The early settlement days of LaGrange consisted of log cabins, farms and a few commercial enterprises. F.D. Cossitt, the founder of the community, was instrumental in the community’s development. By setting aside land for schools and churches, he envisioned his “dream” town that was incorporated in 1879. Today, La Grange is considered a dream town to most of its 15,000 plus residents.
With a hometown, community feel and a cosmopolitan edge, the village of La Grange is centered around its vibrant, attractive downtown area. Small businesses that provide friendly personalized service, a diverse selection of restaurants and an engaged business association pull together to provide a variety of events that draw people from the community and beyond.
Six elementary and two junior high schools serve the area, as well as the nationally recognized Lyons Township High School. La Grange is also home to LaGrange Memorial Hospital, a Level II Trauma Center with 270 beds. Recreation facilities and activities for village residents are provided by the Park District of La Grange as well as a wide variety of other businesses.
